When building custom wood decks, composite decks, or wood docks in Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, and Palm Beach County, choosing the right framing material is one of the most important decisions for long-term durability and safety.

Many homeowners ask why composite decks are still built using wood framing underneath. In our experience designing and building custom outdoor structures throughout South Florida, structural framing must be selected based on strength, moisture resistance, and long-term performance in our coastal climate.

Standard pressure treated lumber sold at large retail stores is designed for general residential construction. While it meets minimum building code requirements, it is not always ideal for Florida’s humidity, salt air, and heavy moisture exposure, which can lead to faster deterioration over time.

For many of our custom deck and dock construction projects, we recommend marine grade pressure treated lumber. This material is commonly used for wood dock construction and waterfront structures because it is designed to withstand saltwater exposure and extremely harsh environments. Marine grade lumber often provides superior resistance to rot, insects, and moisture, making it one of the best structural framing options for South Florida outdoor living projects.

Composite structural framing systems are available but are significantly more expensive and can sometimes trap moisture in low-clearance deck applications. For most residential projects, properly installed marine grade framing provides better structural reliability and long-term value.
